Magic stuns Swifts

Magic beat Swifts into GF

04/07/2010 7:39 PM

The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic has pulled off a huge upset by ousting the NSW Swifts from the ANZ Championship finals, and in doing so, booking its own place in the grand final to take on the Adelaide Thunderbirds with a 54-49 victory over the minor premiers.

It was the Magic's fourth straight win, and it will take a lot of confidence into the season finale in Adelaide on Sunday after toppling the premiership favourites.

Despite racking up 13 consecutive victories during the season proper, the Swifts could not get into their groove in the finals series, bowing out in straight sets.

The Magic's Irene Van Dyk was deadly up forward, shooting 44 goals from 45 attempts, and spearheading the victory.

It was just the second time a New Zealand side has won on Australian soil in 41 attempts over three years of the competition.

Swifts captain Catherine Cox and Susan Pratley got off to a confident start up forward as the Swifts produced a lead, before the Magic hit back.

Van Dyk was on the end of some quality service, with goal attack Jodi Brown acting as feeder to her brutally accurate teammate, as the two teams went goal for goal early as the Magic led 12-11 at the first break.

The Magic then began where they left off in the second stanza, shooting out to a nine-goal half time lead as Brown continued to make the play up forward, and Laura Langman kept finding Van Dyk, who in turn, kept finding the net.

Magic's defence was also choking the Swifts in their attempt to shorten the margin, as Casey Williams and Jade Clark were able to force intercepts and create attacking rebounds in the second quarter.

However, the Swifts did not give in and during the third quarter, reduced the deficit to six goals, but the visitors held tough and increased their lead from half time by one goal to 10 at the final break.

The Swifts gave it their all in the final quarter, but they could not pull off a comeback victory, which gave the Magic their grand final berth.
