What can we take away from the Warriors' opening warm-up match of the season?
Due to the unseasonably inclement weather in Hamilton against the Melbourne Storm, a lot less than was initially hoped.
It was again confirmed that the Warriors are a fine wet-weather team that are nigh-on impenetrable on defence when the rain falls.
And given the skies open more often than not at Mt Smart Stadium in mid-winter, that is a serious positive.
The highlight of the 24-12 win over the Storm was the form of the Warriors' big men.
The loss of Ruben Wiki will felt the most in terms of his off-field influence but it appears there will be little loss across the white stripe in 2009.
After a poor start to 2009, where he fell below his ideal playing weight, Sam Rapira was imperious for both the Warriors and Kiwis and his place in the starting XIII alongside fellow prop Steve Price is secure.
In the soggy Hamilton setting, young props Leeson Ah Mau, Mataupu Poching and Russell Packer were all outstanding. All were members of last year's Under-20 Toyota Cup side and are pushing for a senior bench place this season.
The majority of the pre-match focus was on Stacey Jones' return to the Warriors' No.7 shirt but the weather put a dampener on his comeback.
As is expected for a pre-season hit-out, combinations were shaky as Jones teamed up with new signing Joel Moon in the halves while fellow newcomer Liam Foran and Isaac John also saw game-time in the wet.
It's a shame the skies had to open and curtail the chances for attacking play as the Warriors hold flair in abundance across their backline.
That said, Wade McKinnon looked hungrier than ever in Hamilton and the pain of missing the majority of last season through knee surgery and suspension may still be burning inside. Is his scoring of the first try of 2009 an omen?
Given Michael Witt may struggle to hold his five-eighth spot ahead of Moon, the goal-kicking of Denan Kemp took on extra importance above his form for his new club.
The former Broncos flyer, the top try-scorer for a vast part of 2008 before Brett Stewart caught him, did all that was asked of him and also nailed three from three conversions - including an arrow-straight sideline effort from McKinnon's try.
Not a lot is often taken from the first pre-season fixture of the year but in the Warriors case there was enough achieved to make it a more than worthy activity.
With further warm-ups against North Queensland and Gold Coast to follow, coach Ivan Cleary's main focus will be deciding on his halves combination and bringing his players up to match fitness.
