UK play-off race heats up

Huddersfield enhanced its Super League play-off credentials by moving into third spot with a hard-fought 30-14 victory over derby rival Wakefield at a sun-drenched Galpharm Stadium.

The Giants largely dominated the first half and early tries from hooker Scott Moore and loose forward David Faiumu helped to establish a 12-4 interval lead.

Wakefield crossed through Scott Grix on the half-hour mark and then came within two points of the Giants 11 minutes after the break with a converted try from Tony Martin.

John Kear's men began to dominate as the second half progressed but they had a try from wing Matt Petersen disallowed before Faiumu crossed again in the 59th minute to put Huddersfield 18-10 ahead.

And the Giants put the result beyond doubt in the 69th minute when wing David Hodgson crossed and but Wakefield refused to go away and hit back through Petersen.

Yet the Giants had the final say when Liam Fulton waltzed through a static Wakefield defence to claim his side's fifth try and fullback Brett Hodgson landed his fifth conversion.

Paul Deacon missed a last-gasp conversion as Castleford edged a topsy-turvy encounter 40-38 at Bradford.

Ben Jeffries had crossed with seconds remaining to give the Bulls the chance to claim a draw from an entertaining but scrappy clash at the Grattan Stadium.

Castleford surrendered leads of 12-4 and 34-22 at various stages while the Bulls had been 22-12 in front at half-time.

Both sides scored seven tries but Dean Widders' remarkable 80-metre interception score with seven minutes remaining ultimately proved decisive. Joe Westerman landed six goals for the visitors.

On Saturday, history-maker Keith Senior helped Leeds take full advantage of St Helens' surprise defeat at Salford as it closed the gap between the two at the top of the table to two points courtesy of a thrilling win at Hull.

The evergreen centre, who became the first player in the modern era to reach 500 senior appearances, scored one of Brian McClennan's side's seven tries as it condemned Hull to a 12th defeat in its last 15, although the home side deserved every credit after recovering from being 30-6 down.

Ryan Hall (two), Scott Donald, Ashley Gibson, Kevin Sinfield and Lee Smith joined Senior on the scoresheet for Leeds, with Shaun Berrigan, Mike Burnett, Gareth Raynor, Danny Tickle and Kirk Yeaman crossing the tryline for Hull.

The two points, earned without injured playmaker Danny McGuire, represented Leeds' fourth straight win and their seventh in their last eight.

Two second-half tries from fullback Richie Mathers finished off a comfortable evening's work for Warrington as it condemned the Celtic Crusaders to yet another defeat, 22-6.

Warrington was able to climb into seventh place with the victory and has given its play-off hopes further momentum after successive triumphs at the Halliwell Jones Stadium over Hull last week and, before that, a win in France.

Jon Clarke and Ben Harrison joined Mathers in scoring tries for the Wolves, with Luke Dyer the only man to cross for the hosts.

Jean-Philippe Baile's hat-trick helped Catalans Dragons to a 23-12 victory over Hull KR.

Baile crossed in the ninth and 14th minutes as the hosts stormed into an early lead at Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Ben Cockayne got Rovers on the board with a score in the 24th minute but Jason Croker added a third for the Dragons just before half-time.

The visitors reduced their deficit to just six points when Michael
